New York City Guitarist/Composer Joel Harrison
Touring the Northwest
Feb. 6-11, 2002
Playing San Francisco
Feb. 1-2, 2002

Internationally acclaimed guitarist/composer Joel Harrison will be touring the Northwest with a quartet featuring the virtuosic Jazz/ Rock/ Classical bassoonist Paul Hanson. Hanson is the only person in the world who can summon the spirits of Hendrix, Coltrane, Sun Ra, James Brown, and a Balkan bagpipes player on bassoon. He has performed with Bela Fleck, Don Cherry, Peter Apfelbaum, Boz Skaggs, etc.

Joel Harrison’s music is a category-confounding blend of musical styles, borrowing from Jazz, Blues, Classical, and World Music. In one evening he is liable to move from a difficult composition in odd meter, to a Hendrix cover, to an achingly beautiful ballad, to a Johnny Cash tune, to a free improvisation. Fascinating rhythms, rich harmony, unusual textures, and lyrical and/or spiky melodies abound. The Village Voice called him “a brilliant guitarist and unique genre- bending composer.” Filling out Harrison’s quartet are Russ Gold on drums and Damian Erskine (drummer Peter Erskine’s nephew!) on bass.

Two years ago Harrison came through the Northwest with a Jim Pepper Tribute Band that included Dewey Redman, Bob Moses, and Amina Myers. These shows mark his return to the coast. Harrison has won numerous composition awards, has had glowing reviews in Downbeat, Jazz Times, Option, Cadence, etc., and has just recorded his 4th CD entitled Free Country which features radical jazz versions of Appalachian and OLD Country tunes. His Octet CD Range of Motion was voted one of the years top ten (1998) by Dan Oullette of Downbeat. His 9 Winds CD, 3+3=7, a 3 guitar and 3 percussion soundfest, features Nels and Alex Cline.
