Joel Harrison & Free Country tour the West Coast in support of his new CD Free Country
Guitarist Joel Harrison will bring his unique country meets jazz sound to select West Coast cities and venues from August 1-12. The music that will be featured can be heard on Harrisons new CD, Free Country (ACT/High Note Records). This recording is a collection of old American Country and Appalachian tunes arranged in unusual, sometimes radical, ways. This body of work is Harrisons sonic view of the experiment known as America- not the billboard, but the underbelly. He has taken timeless songs into regions both haunting and humorous, gorgeous and reckless, retelling their stories through the lens of his visionary arranging and the improvisational talents of the players. In essence it is a Jazz record, but its stylistic scope is enormous. Harrison has practically created a new genre. He has linked the Country songbook to Jazz in a startling new way.
Tour Ensembles:
* Joel Harrison (vocals, electric and electric slide guitars); David Binney (alto sax, live sampling); Thomas Morgan (acoustic bass); Dan Weiss (drums, tablas); Jeff Gauthier (violin)
** Joel Harrison (vocals, electric and electric slide guitars); David Binney (alto sax, live sampling); Thomas Morgan (acoustic bass); Dan Weiss (drums, tablas); Raz Kennedy (vocals); Mark Little (piano)

Joel Harrison returns home! This performance is especially exciting to me since Blues Alley is where I first went to hear Jazz as a teenager growing up in DC. I remember seeing Teddy Wilson (from Benny Goodmans group) there when I was 16 and trying to convince him of the artistic significance and integrity of Rock music! Arghh...
