Guitarist/Vocalist/Songwriter JOEL HARRISON Blends Country, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Folk, Rock and World on New CD, So Long 2nd Street. Follows Hugely Successful 2003 Release, Free Country

Joel Harrison has a gift for interpreting and marrying American music in all its forms as he made clear on his 2003 release, Free Country, which was named by many critics as one the best recordings of that year. As the SACRAMENTO BEE commented:

Norah Jones adds her soft drawl to a somber, soulful reading of Johnny Cash’s I Walk the Line and an equally adventurous Tennessee Waltz. But by the time this transcendent record is over, you nearly forget Jones was even on it. Harrison has created a grand tribute to divergent musical genres, which he shows have more in common than anyone would have guessed.

Harrison continues on that musical path on So Long 2nd Street (HighNote/ACT), which marks his 5th recording as a leader but his first as a vocalist. Once again he travels along the seams of jazz, country, blues, and spirituals, using country classics, hymns, and folk tunes as a gateway to his distinctive creative music making. Side by side with gems by Merle Haggard, Jimmy Webb, the Stanley Brothers and timeless traditional tunes, Harrison has included three of his own compositions, one co-written by saxophonist, David Binney, a frequent collaborator. Harrison’s singular arranging style and the improvisational talents of his band create a dramatic atmosphere full of compositional surprises, gorgeous, moody textures, explosive soloing and quiet, intimate detail. The band consists of Gary Versace, accordion, organ, piano; Dan Weiss, drums.

21st Century Schizoid Music series
Cornelia Street Cafe

29 Cornelia St., West Village, NYC
212-989-9319

The first set will be new compositions for Sextet (my quartet plus strings- violin and cello) Some of these pieces are part of a suite composed with the help of a NYSCA grant and are among my most involved compositions to date. There will be some seriously weird stuff with todd reynolds from the Ethel string quartet manning his electronic arsenal along with Binney’s laptop and my effects. Not to mention the shear virtuosity of this gang.
The second set will be very different- I will do solo and duo versions of my original songs.

Dave Binney: sax, electronics
Todd Reynolds (Ethel quartet): violin, electronics
Wendy Cutter: (Bang On a Can Allstars): cello

We Have Been the Victims of a Broken Promise
WORLD PREMIERE

Makor
35 W. 67th St., New York, NY
212-612-1000
$15 advance/$18 door
“This is a premiere of a 5-movement, 50-minute piece for double quartet, by far the most involved composing I have ever done in terms of length, concept, and structure. This New York State Council of the Arts commission is my most evolved attempt to date to bring together the worlds of ‘classical’ (notated) music and ‘Jazz’ (improvisation). It is NOT a Jazz piece with lazily composed strings appended. It is, if anything, a piece of classical music, with influences from Appalachia, Africa, and other nameless locales, both urban and non-urban, with improvisation. It is (hopefully) a beautiful, intense, sad, mysterious, hopeful, grooving, rocking, virtuosic work called We Have Been the Victims of a Broken Promise. It has allowed me to grow exponentionally. It features a who’s who of incredible players from the worlds of Ethel, Bang on a Can, Alarm Will Sound, and of course, some of the most amazing Jazz players anywhere. Also, included- an arrangement for string quartet of a Paul Motian composition. The 2nd set will be a set of Harrison on Harrison material featuring Uri Caine on piano.”

Todd Reynolds, Chris Howes,
Caleb Burhans, Wendy Sutter
